At the beginning of August 2014, I was the heaviest I’ve ever been. I was a more than a year out of law school, and all out of excuses (I’ll lose weight once I finish the Bar… I’ll lose weight once I start working full time, etc). The largest size available in most plus size stores was starting to be too small on me. I had a closet full of clothes that were too tight, and I was uncomfortable in my own skin. I drank at least 20oz of Diet Pepsi a day.. at least. I was eating out for lunch almost every day, sometimes attempting to be “healthy”, but never truly concerned about what went into my mouth. During this time, and the months preceding, I was walking or using the elliptical about three to four times a week for thirty minutes, but I wasn’t pushing myself. I would just move until the timer hit exactly 30:00, and I was done. I was getting frustrated because my “diets” or attempts at losing weight were not working. I needed a change, but I didn’t really know what to do, or how to do it.
Around the second week of August 2014, I started with Project Weight Loss Wilmington, and I’m now no longer the person I just described above. With my line of work, I spend all day helping other people with their problems, and it was time for someone to help me with mine.
I was forced to sit down and really think about WHY I wanted to do this—reasons deeper than to just lose weight.
Because I was serious about making a change, I took this new challenge to heart. I started out huffing and puffing my way through hell (Anita’s workouts) two times a week for an hour. She would ask us to do things that I thought were physically impossible—sometimes they were, but luckily there are always modified versions! After a few weeks, I could tell a major difference in my stamina, and my ability to push my body to do more. I wasn’t as tired or as sore, and I was able to physically do things I never thought I could do. For the first time in my life, I actually enjoyed working out.
I started to take my diet seriously. I quit drinking sodas cold turkey (still haven't had one sip since I started), and I made drastic changes to my eating habits. I stopped eating out almost completely, and I started logging every piece/bite/crumb that went into my mouth onto My Fitness Pal. I started to count calories, and I internally pitched a fit at “how little” I was eating. To me, 1400 calories just wasn’t enough, and I wanted more food, specifically fried food, or any food I knew I couldn’t have. I also stopped drinking for the first twelve weeks, which in turn lead to no late night snacks and added empty calories.
After a few weeks, I could tell a major change in my body and in my mindset. I no longer craved the things I shouldn't have (as badly), and my clothes were starting to get looser. 1400 calories started to seem like way too many. I kept plugging along, and after twelve weeks, I completed my first 5K, and I was down 28 pounds. I found a new respect for myself and for my body. I felt great, and people really started to notice.
Fast forward almost a year later, and I now do group workouts three to four days a week, and I try to squeeze in Zumba at least once a week. I am now genuinely upset if a conflict comes up and I can’t workout, whereas last year, exercise was punishment. I still continue to log my food, and haven’t missed a day since starting PWLW. Although I am continuing to work out and log my food, I’m still a major work in progress.
My weight loss has been slow, but the changes I feel and see have been enormous. I am down almost two dress sizes, and clothes are so much more fun because they actually fit like they are supposed to. I am stronger than I’ve ever been in my life. Although I can’t do some exercises quickly, or perfectly, I am able to do them. Workouts sometimes terrify me when I see them on the board, but I’m able to complete them. I keep pushing through, and each week I’m getting better. I am constantly amazed at what I can do now that I wasn’t able to do a year ago.
I have always set really big goals for myself (i.e. lose 100 pounds, or run a half marathon) and I am learning to set smaller goals and to celebrate the little things. I’ve done so much over the past year, and I have so much more to work towards and to look forward to in the next.
I truly contribute my success to Anita and the FitMo Family that she has created. It has been amazing getting to know others who are like me – on their way to a healthier version of themselves. Anita pushes us and encourages us to do more and to be more. She is always there to support us, and to correct our technique when needed. She will also modify the workouts to make sure that each person, despite any personal physical issues, can still get a great workout. The FitMo training group and family keep me motivated and keep me coming back week after week. Anita has made health and wellness her life’s goal, and she is constantly coming up with new workouts.
I know that without Anita and FitMo, I would still be where I was a year ago – unhappy with myself and wanting a change. My experience with FitMo has truly been a journey, and I’m just getting started. For anyone who is serious about making a change, this is the place you need to be. You will have the support you need to push yourself to be a better you!

I absolutely love FitMo! Anita is a phenomenal trainer, and I love that she makes everyone feel welcome in her class (regardless of fitness level). The workouts are always challenging, but always fun. It is such a great environment and everyone in the class is so welcoming! I am so happy to be a part of FitMo! I would recommend this class to anyone!
Genuine, authentic, real! These words describe FitMo and Anita Harrell, the trainer who leads our workouts. FitMo is the best thing I have done for my physical well-being since I retired in 2012. As a result of Anita's guidance and the motivation provided my FitMo friends, I am stronger, weigh less, and determined to continue working on my fitness goals. Thank you, FitMo team!
I love FitMo. Anita is such an amazing and inspirational trainer. She makes everyone feel welcome in her class, no matter what their fitness level is. She is so motivating and everything she does comes from her heart. She is a very kind and giving person. She makes working out fun, while at the same time challenging. I would highly recommend this class!!!!
Anita Harrell has been nothing short of amazing! I started in July 2015. Best decision I have ever made. She is motivational & fun, but most importantly she is knowledgeable! She helps you with your form to make sure you get the most out of your workout and prevent injury. There is always a modification if you have an existing or ongoing injury/condition as well. The workout is forever changing so it never gets boring. The other members of the FitMo family are encouraging as well! I cannot speak highly enough about what Anita and FitMo have done for me. Give it a try, you won't regret it!!
I cannot imagine what my life would be like without Anita and FitMo! Workouts used to be punishment for me, and I now look forward to going. This is truly a fitness family--people coming together and supporting each other. There are no judgments, and the workouts can always be modified for anyone who needs it.
I love the friendly environment and the motivation you get to live a healthier better life overall. It has taught me discipline!
Words can't express the gratitude I have for Anita's gift. She is blessing us and taking her own time to help us get our lives back!!! Their is much to be said for people like that. They are a rare and special breed these days. If your looking for a great trainer, who not only fun, but compassionate, Anita is where it's at!
Anita is amazing and this is the first gym I've ever felt completely comfortable in. I can't say enough good things about Fitness Motivation and Anita.
Great place to be for positive motivation. That is what most people lack in completing hard tasks. It is easier when you have so many caring people pushing you and are genuinely proud of your accomplishments. It makes you want to push harder, eat better and win together.
You are never bored. The exercises change every time so the suspense is really built up until you see it written on the board. The groans and pains are all good. The exercise buddies are the best; I wouldn't have done it on my own. The group environment keeps you motivated, and Anita will work with your level, so you are competing with yourself and no one else. There are always extras too: fun challenges, nutritional/healthy recipe ideas, etc.
Anita Harrell I think what I like about you is how much you love people. Your heart for the people that you help is absolutely transparent and the amount you love them is obvious. I have only seen a few people with that special passion about the people in their life and it makes you really unique in a great way.
Anita has quite literally saved my life. I have lost and gained weight so many times throughout the years that I was starting to just accept the fact that I would never be healthy and that I'd always be fat. Then I came across an article about Anita and her passion for helping people get healthy and get fit. It felt like this was a priceless opportunity to put everything together - nutrition, exercise, etc. and really make a life change. After 3 months of working with Anita I lost over 20 lbs, and after 7 months of working with her I lost a total of 41 lbs. I have a long way to go in my weight loss journey but this experience has truly changed me.
Anita has the rare gift of being able to make you feel the most comfortable & most uncomfortable that you have ever felt!! She will never judge you or make you feel bad about yourself, and she will always challenge you to do better. Everyone that walks in her door feels like family, and she inspires such a warm, supportive and (friendly) competitive environment. She pushes you to do your best, and just when you think you can't do anymore she makes you do some more - and guess what - you can do it!! I hate burpees and wall balls and reverse lunges, but when Anita tells me to do them I do them! You can't argue with results. I could barely run a mile when I started and 7 months later I'm running an average of 2.5 - 3 miles three times a week. I feel better than I have in such a long time, and I feel the athlete in me returning day by day! Anita is a game changer in every sense of the word - you will never get bored of workouts, and you will be smiling through the sweat and sometimes tears! And every second will be worth it! Go FITMO!!!
